Installing side steps on a truck.

Postby Gia the Punk Rock Chef on Sun Mar 20, 2011 2:06 am

Does ANYONE have experience with this? I just bought a used Dodge Ram 1500 SLT model quad cab. I'm from Texas, bigger is better and I'm only 4'11. So basically I LITERALLY have to climb into my truck and jump out of it, moving to the canadian border is not ideal for jumping out as the snow and ice get heavy and I would eat my shit just trying.

The vehicle (obviously) does not come with the very necessary for me side steps that help you to get in and out of this humongous monster of a truck. I was quoted over $500 from the dealership and found some reasonably priced sets online. I've decided to DIY it. Does anyone have any experience to share, I mean I'm pretty good at building and fixing things myslef...I'm on here aren't I? 8)

I would find a cheap mechanic- unless you have Automotive tools or know someone whom you can borrow them from- which in that case, I'd ask them to help you with this.
Unless of course you want them to fall off while driving down the road- I personally don't think the exterior of a car is something to DIY unless you are a mechanic/know how to work on cars...
You're going to need special tools most likely which will be expensive no doubt, it might be better to bite the bullet, save up and find someone to do it.

We got my Dad running boards for his truck a few years ago (same model as you have! :)) and we just got them online he installed them himself.. i mean theyre not too hard to put on and you can always take them to a cheap mechanic if you're having trouble.

Yeah, I actually have a decent knowledge and experience with car repair, so I appreciate your concern but I have done all of my maintenance work on my mom's and my cars since I was 15. My cousins are mechanics (they are too busy with their jobs and school to help out) and said I was welcome to any of the tools they have at their dad's place.

But again, unless a person is totally confident and has experience, you should never "DIY" your vehicle and always leave it in the hands of a professional. I would encourage that to everyone. I just wanted to know if there were any grease monkeys out there with the experience.

Yeah I planned on buying the vehicle's repair guide tomorrow as well as mirrors for my blindside, 4 way lug nut remover and a floor jack. I'll ask the fellas what they think. One of our neighbors highly recommended NOT getting side steps as he says this shortens the vehicle and the can easily become damaged and damage other things. Anybody else have an opinion on this? I'll take any feedback. 8)

No, that actually sounds like the most badass way to get in and out of my truck. Take note miss.hell, could be interesting in those heels of yours.

Actually, I had to return to the dealership so that they could repair my foglights and electrical system for my tow package, so I batted my eyelashes and the mechanic says he'll install them for me for free. Yay! I was going to do it myself, but why when someone else can do it for me and for free at that. Thanks for the comments though! 8)
