Make your own laundry soap

Postby ComradeM on Tue Nov 23, 2010 3:23 pm

I posted in the awesome thread that I made my own laundry soap, and someone wanted a tutorial...but alas, I made mine from someone else's tutorial (Thomas from Strike Anywhere...whoo!) sooo

Here's the link
http://architects.zombie-popcorn.com/?p=136

You dont NEED to watch the video, because the printed instructions are fine, but the video is pretty amusing.

Also, the recipe calls for "super washing soda", and I did a little research to learn that washing soda is sodium carbonate, and baking soda is, as I'm sure you know, sodium bicarbonate. So basically, washing soda is stronger for stains and stuff, but baking soda will work, and is gentler on your clothes. I used baking soda cuz I had it, and couldnt find washing soda at the store.

Right!? I just wanna put him in my pocket! haha

Also: I used my soap yesterday for the first time, and it seems to be a win. I didn't put any essential oils in mine, so my laundry literally smells like nothing, but it feels clean, if that makes any sense. Soo yeah. It's a win! haha

this is probably a dumb question, but does anyone know if this is safe to use in a high efficiency washing machine?

Soo awesome. My usual laundry soap is running out soon... I want to make this, but I worry about wrecking the communal washing machine I use.

Its essentially the same stuff thats in regular laundry soap anyways, minus some of the harsher chemicals. My boyfriend and I use this homemade stuff, and my roommate uses "regular" laundry soap, and it doesn't seem to make a difference in the washer.

Ok thanks! :) I always shy away from such homemade recipes because I don't know too much about the chemicals (like Borax in this one)
but once I find out where to buy that I'll give it a try.

One last suggestion is to do the optional step of running the finished product through a blender or food processor if you have one. I didn't do that, and mine's quite lumpy, which wouldn't matter except I put it in my old soap container and it doesn't come out of the spout very easily.
