female mechanics..

I'm sure I'll have no clue what goes on in here, but really, it's so the guys don't bitch, and hey, we have to support the men who wanna be creative and crafty now, don't we?

I'm a panelbeater and I get some pretty strange looks when I first meet customers.. But once they realise you know and love what you're doing they pull their heads in pretty quick.. As Ed Roth says, it's all about the sunglasses and the walk hahahaha

I'm actually from up the sunshine coast but close enough :) I dont do mechanical stuff very much unless i have to. Panel beating is normally split into either straight beating or spray painting but i do both. I think its a lot more flexible that way.

It's a really satisfying job because you have to use your brain as much as your hands and you get a real sense of achievement at the end of the day when you look back over what you did. It's really hard work and dirty too and most of the stuff you have to do is really shitty but at the end of the day it's all worth it!

I think its a great idea to do a mechanical course of some kind whether you want to be a mechanic or not. It will always come in handy when you break down somewhere!

I don't think getting people to come to you once you're already a mechanic would be the hard part. All but 2 of the women I knew who has that idea dropped out of school 1/2 way through. Going through the extremely sexists schools is the hard part. Then trying to find a job where you don't get talked down to by everyone you work with everyday. You actually have to be better than most of the men in your class because any shortcomming will get blamed on your vagina. But, if you're good, and you can take it and dish it back, none of that will matter. Once you're good and have some experience and have proven yourself within a community, you may actually find youself with extra business because you are a female doing a good job in a mans feild.

I do collision repair myself and my first job was working on cranes & tractors and shit. I was the only person in the entire place that could spray and not run, weld, do bondo, and everything else effectively, and I worked with all men! It was tuff for a lil while, there was this really creepy guy that kept hitting on me...he had no teeth and was the head welder but he ended up getting fired (thank god). But if its what you want to do go for it. I love it. A lot of guys (even my boyfriend) talk down to me cos they don't think I know shit from a stick but when I pull out all the shit I know and top em they shut the fuck up. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing teacher that saw my skill and really push me. I was thrown out of the class a year ago and plan on starting over come next school year so I can be certified. :-D

that is the sign of a good mechanic...too many of them rely on little computers to give them alist of things that might be wrong...then they just go down it charging you all the way....

Chicks would come to you! I wanted to be a mechanic and got signed up for school and everything until my ass of a sperm donor talked me out of it. I can't believe I was stupid enough to listen to him. I look back on it all the time and wish I had done it. I say go for it if that's what you are passionate about.

I think it would be awesome I'd have my car fixed by a girl if I had the chance. I know my tools pretty well, but I don't know much about fixing cars other than how to change the oil(which I've never done myself.)
