TUTORIAL - 40's Rolls

This tutorial is for 40's style hair rolls (NOT victory rolls, those are much larger and rounder and sit parallel on either side of the head and point forward instead of up... that one will come later, but it's basically using the same technique and premise).

Step #1: Gather your pins together... at first, you'll need a lot. As you get better, you'll use less. I now use 6 total (2 on each side, 2 on the flower).
Image

Step #2: Create your part... this could be in the middle or on either side. Traditionally, it is on either side (back then, it was on the right side for married women and the left side for single women). Wet your hair and comb out your part so that it's flat and there are little to no flyaways.
Image

Step #3: Brush the first side upwards and away from your face (some people take a little, some people take the whole bundle. Seeing as this is my "higher" roll, I take the whole bundle from ear upwards and sweep this up and back, rolling towards the head in one sweep.
Image

Step #4: While rolling upwards, you are going to grab the hair right from the brush with your opposing hand.
Image

Step #5: Start rolling your hair inward (towards the head) from the ends in. Roll slightly tighter as you go until you reach the top of the head. Pin this down from either end (sorry, couldn't take photo, needed both hands). You'll put your first pin in from the front to the back, and the second one crossing over that pin (to form a slight X) from the back to the front. This will hold the roll in place (be sure to pick up some hairs from the scalp so that these will hold in one spot, rather than rolling back down).
Image

Step #6: This should be the first roll that you have completed.
Image

Step #7: Do the same with the other side, only you're making a smaller roll (this is the smaller portion from the side that's parted). The roll will also be slightly lower down for effect).
Image

Step #8: Curl your bangs (if necessary - and no, my iron is NOT coated in crud, I don't spray while using my iron, that's gross... it just looks like gold leafing, it's sort of a matte finish).
Image

Step #9: Curl your loose hair (the stuff that's hanging down). You can do these in spiral curls, regular curls, or just roll the ends, it's up to you.
Image

Step #10: Brush the curls out very lightly (so it looks rolled, rather than curly).
Image

Step #11: Hairspray your rolls and curls and smooth the flyaways out of the rolls.
Image

Step #12: You should look something like this at that point (not facially, just hair. LOL... and excuse the no-makeup look. EWWW!).
Image

Step #13: Grab whatever decorative piece you would like for your hair. I'm using a traditional stargazer lilly (silk). It's one of my favorites. I literally grab a bundle of silks from the store, clip off the top, leaving approximately 1 inch of wired stem and use that to tuck under the hair.
Image

Step #14: Once you've tucked your stem, you're going to pin it. Both pins you use will go in an upward position on your hair. The first, towards the front of the head, grabbing the stem of the flower. The second, forming an X again, towards the back of the head, also grabbing the flower but crossing over the first pin. This secures it into place.
Image

Step #15: TADA!!! You're done. 40's rolls in no time!

Even you can do rolls... instead of tucking all of the hair (if it's just too much), you can let the remaining hair that otherwise would be tucked inside flow down the backside with the rest of your hair... curl it a little and no one will ever know where it came from.

would that be your left, or their left? yours, right?

P.S. I am actually printing out all your tutorials and putting them in my new 'tutorial folder' with different sections in the folder for hair, make-up, clothes etc. I hope you don't mind  I can't believe I just admitted I have a tutorial folder. Now you'll all laugh at me.
