The Stubbi (and how to get free ones)

Postby lolkittyfufu on Fri Sep 04, 2009 8:48 pm

Yes I know this is sorta dorky but hopefully it will be useful to someone...
In the UK environmental wardens prowl the streets, in search of those who drop litter, patiently waiting for the chance to gleefully whip out they're fixed penalty book and charge you £50 for doing so. There isn't always a bin to put cigarette butts or gum in and I'll be damned if I'm going to put either in my coat or jeans pocket or keep them in hand until I find one.
Until the other day I knew nothing about portable ashtrays or "mini bins". I thought that if I was smoking outside that I would be SOL till I found a bin. My boyfriend's Mom who is an environmental warden, brought home these things called stubbies little pocket sized ashtray things that you put fag ends and gum in. They are fire and odour proof too. I don't really think that it is pretty but I must admit it is useful. Cheap to buy (£1.50) if you want a coloured or patterned one, or you can get them for free from the wardens if you ask.

I'm not sure where to get them from in the states but this is where the bf's Mom told me to find the prettier ones. http://www.stubbi.co.uk
I's really like to figure out how to make them. I just need to figure out what the foil like stuff on the inside is, I think a felt leopard one would kick ass.

That's such a rad idea! I'd get one for my boyfriend so he can stop dropping cigarette butts in empty soda cans in my car, making my car stink...

The gum wouldn't get sticky if you still had the paper, but i wouldnt just put it in there either. They really write you tickets for spitting out gum?

The gum actually peels off really easy, but its better with the paper.
Yes it seriously is a £50 fixed penalty for spitting out gum or dropping cig butt or any sort of litter!! They are really tough on littering here. Also if you dispute the fixed penalty and lose you will end up with a criminal record.
I've been really surprised about the amount of people in the UK who don't actually know about fixed penalties, there have been a couple of advertising campaigns for littering but, from what I have seen they have been a bit vague about it all.
Tourists can also be given the fixed penalties too if they are repeatedly caught.

Wow, its great for the littering aspect but i think its just a little ocd, aren't there more important things to worry about? idk. But t is really cool that they are giving you those Stubbi's for free. Thats nice of them.

i had a friend that had a cigarette lighter case that had a small ashtray connected to it. she bought in when she lived in Arizona. i would think one of those little card cases or the cigarette cases would work too. i just went to an electronic cigarette so i don't need to worry about it anymore.
It makes no sense to argue with crazy people cause crazy people don't have to make sense.

you say that, but if you're actually someplace that takes littering that seriously you see how nice & clean things would be if people had a little incentive to do the right thing.

not so much. i actually got a bunch of free ones at an earth day festival a couple years ago & it's foil lined inside & snaps closed, so as long as you close it the smell stays inside. my boyfriend & i love them for spending time outdoors. we try to be really conscious about waste & like to spend time in really natural environments. yes, it would be better if we could both just quit smoking, but in the mean time we bring these on our hikes with us & feel a little better about not contributing to leaving our waste all over the world.
