tattoo over scars?

Postby addictedmisery on Fri Feb 11, 2011 8:50 pm

hello there.
when i was younger, i was depressed, and as a coping mechanism, i turned to self-mutilation.
now, years later, i'm pretty much covered in scars. i want to get tattooed over several of them, on my arm,
but i was wondering if this would work well?
has anyone else here ever gotten tattooed over scars? do they make the ink fade? or distort the image?
my scars are very visible and raised, they're all bumpy. i want to get a tree, that i drew, on my forearm to cover some of them, but i've never been tattooed before and im clueless.. also, i'm extremely picky with art, i don't want the tattoo to be messy.

the upper part of my arm has very, very thick scars, and the lower part of my arm, my forarm, has smaller, les bumpy, tinyer scars. i figured that i should stick to only getting tattooed on the lower part of my arm since the scars are much less visible, i figure it would interfere less with the tattoo and still draw attention away from the nastier, bigger scars above it. i don't know. i'm not sure yet.

anybody have any info on tattoing over scars? i want to be sure of this before i get it done, and know everything i possibly can about the procedure for this..

i quickly drew out on my arm what i sort of would want the tattoo to look like, here:

sorry if the pic's big..

also, thisis me :

:) i figured the tattoo would go well..

i'm going to preface this with I AM NOT THE EXPERT. but i have asked about tattooing over scars in the past on here, so you might want to search it. i've also asked the artists who did my tattoos. they both said it's possible to do, and do neatly, but you want to find someone with scar experience, and a very light hand. even then, there's not a 100% gaurentee because the tissue is different than normal skin tissue. Experts, please add/ correct me on this?

Talk to the artist. Much easier than getting info here, then going to him or her and saying they won't. Hell, even an email with a picture they'd get somewhat of an idea.

I love that you're all about turning something difficult into something beautiful. I intend to do this eventually.

I have no input as far as your actual inquiry, but I love your design.

I was tattooed over some pretty bad scars on my chest; some were raised, and some were indented. My artist has a light hand, and had no problem with either type of scars.
The main thing you want to consider is that the ink might blow out a little, since the skin there is more sensitive, in a way. yes, scar tissue is tougher in the sense of vs regular skin, but more sensitive to ink.

definitely talk to your artist, because they will be able to give you better information based on looking and feeling your scars in person.

If I were doing the piece I would suggest some sort of background to hide the scars a bit.
