I nearly cried when i read the bit about him having to divorce her so she could get benefits. He must have been so devastated.

The Shanks didn't notice in the fine print of Wal-Mart's health plan policy that the company has the right to recoup medical expenses if an employee collects damages in a lawsuit.

That's not in the fine print, i remember reading it. They're insurance isn't really that good anyway, but it better than none. I feel so bad for them.

wal mart has such a stupid set of values!!! its my in-between job right now and i absolutely HATE seeing the things they give away to absolutely any customer who whines and then they do a thing like THIS to an obviously loyal associate who worked there even before her accident NEARLY EIGHT YEARS AGO!!! that bit pisses me off and its only the freakin tip of the iceberg.
its just so stupid... i wish everyone could see what the employees see... for example. earlier this year like march or so (it was still rainy and snowy here) this ugly girl and her buck-tooth boyfriend got a flat tire in the parking lot and like idiots they drove on it anyway and ruined the tire beyond repair. they bitched about the cost of a new tire for forever and then they bitched about the wait time because we only had one tire technician and they were like the fourth people in line. so suddenly like half an hour later (nowhere NEAR long enough for their car to be finished) she slips and falls in the parking lot and gets a cut on her forehead and is SCREECHING about how her eye hurts and she needs stitches and needs to go to the hospital and she cant because 'those blockhead blankety-blank tire technicians are so slow' so pretty much the tire tech had to stop what he was doing, put spare tires onto the car he WAS working on and pull it out of the shop so he could work on this girls car while she sat in a freakin wheelchair with a blanket on her lap while her stupid boyfriend was yelling at everyone who walked by. it wasnt any fault of wal-mart.... yet we gave them a free tire that day and they came back whining some more a few days later and they were given three more tires, free. thats like four hundred dollars and they do stuff like this ALL THE TIME. and they cant afford to take care of this poor woman?

the story link was broken for me so i don't know the details but..........

walmart most deff has it upsides too.
they buy in mass quantity so they can have lower prices. a mom can buy her diapers, her formula, baby shoes and still have money for daycare.
they hire the elderly and felons ( people who can't get hired ANYWHERE.)
the start out pay there is on average one dollar above the states minimum wage.
each store employs at least 500 people, creating a buttload of jobs.
etc, etc, etc...........
i am not ashamed of what i am but it often makes me sad.

Just goes to show...READ the fine fine print before you sign up for something.

Always always always!!!

I won't read the article because it will probably piss me off and walmart is one of the few places in this god awful pothole of a town to shop for stuff so i can't boycott it the way i'd like to. :(

it IS good that they can provide cheap products to families that might otherwise have to go without... and the starting pay is alright but once you get hired its like the almost don't care... if you were sick a couple days or on vacation and don't average 34 hours a week over a three month period they will take away your health benefits with little or no warning. the higher ups just don't care, at my store anyway.

Also you have to ask for days off 5 weeks in advance and 4 only if youre lucky. never 2 or 3.

i've worked there for a year now and i dont even make 9.00 an hour yet, and i'm working one of the most laborious jobs there. everyone in the tire shop threatened to go on strike and the store manager just told us (in not so many words) that it was cheaper for them to hire new people than to give us raises anyway.

wal mart :x thats all i have to say about it

sorry i meant to post NICE things about wal mart too haha

one good thing is that most of the "great value" and "sam's choice" and "supertech" brand items aren't actually manufactured cheaply... they are in fact bought from the name brand who is selling it the cheapest! i know this is true for like automotive chemicals and etc and i've heard its true for cleaning products and some food... but i'm not positive.

and it is very nice to see all the sweet elderly people there :)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
i work there too dude.
i love the little old blue haired ladies!
management sucks, but that's every job i've ever had. power trippers.
they're pretty good to us though. on the 4th of July they hooked us up with a FAT bbq. steaks, ribs, chicken, salads, sodas, etc. plus they had this dope old texan guy that works maintenance cook so you know it was bomb. we have potlucks almost every friday and if you grub you kick down a couple of bucks and they give it to the local childrens hospital. from what i've been told our store is really fucking lucky. most of the surrounding stores have employees that are miserable. morale is high at mine.
my store let's me get away with visible tattoos and a deathrock hawk if i wear it in a ponytail or to the side. it's not such a bad racket. plus we have an indoor smoking lounge. i don't know why that makes me so happy but it does.
i am not ashamed of what i am but it often makes me sad.

I work at Walmart.
I hate it.
It pays the bills until I get a better job.
I've been working there for about 3 years.
I used to work at a different store, and they treated us REALLY well.
At my new store, they treat us like crap.
But I guess it's better than being jobless.
But I've seen some REALLY horrendous things go down....

Wal-Mart is the help i hate to love. Cheap/Free everything, and the greatest people watching except for the JR outlet.
I wouldn't make a habit of going though.

I do have to say, however, that I have heard the rest of this story rather recently, and it's not as horrible as it sounds. This woman used her Walmart insurance to pay for her medical costs. THEN, her husband sued the truck driver for the money to pay for the medical costs, which were already paid for by insurance (PLUS pain and suffering). So basically, they had TWICE the funds to pay for her medical costs, and wanted to keep the extra money. Clearly, Walmart doesn't want money coming out of their own pockets to pay for something is already being payed for by another party. The husband and woman just wanted twice the money. Has this couple been dealt an awful hand? Absolutely. Is it sad? Of course. But that does not entitle them to keep money that does not belong to them. The man even said, he wanted to keep the extra money to take care of his wife (day to day expenses). But that's not what health insurance is for.

^Only some health insurance policies will cover expenses of home nursing for a limited time. The policy she had likely only covered hospital, prescriptions, and maybe some doctors visits.

Disability insurance would be what pays for day-to-day expenses when a person can't work due to illness or injury.
